InDesign CC 2018 adds borders to shading

Skilled Workman Posted on October 19, 2017 by David BergslandOctober 10, 2017

I’ve waited a long time to write this: InDesign CC 2018 adds borders to shading! This is one I’ve been pushing for over the past decade or so. I was excited when they added paragraph shading. I never could understand why the borders weren’t added at the same time. Regardless, the InDesign team added them for this update. Finally, we have a good sidebar solution for ePUBs This has always been a major hassle in ePUB design. Sidebars simply don’t work … Continue reading →

New release: InDesign CC Book Production, putting books together

Skilled Workman Posted on August 26, 2017 by David BergslandAugust 26, 2017

With this final release, InDesign CC Book Production, Putting the book together, my video coursework for book production is complete. This course removes the difficulty and relives the complexity of producing excellent quality, professional books. This is a very practical course. There is a lot to learn, but none of it is very difficult. It is very complex though. It is the goal of the course to make the complexity easy to understand and relatively simple to execute. If you have … Continue reading →

First course of book production has been released

Skilled Workman Posted on August 4, 2017 by David BergslandSeptember 12, 2017

Today, my first course of book production has been released. I’m building video coursework for using InDesign to produce books on Udemy starting with basic typography. Actually we start with the very beginning, where you must choose: Book size Margins Column width And more This first course of book production lays a solid foundation This is the largest lack in most self-published books today. Much of it is not the fault of the author or designer—it’s the tools they are using. … Continue reading →

Book design needs titling fonts

Skilled Workman Posted on June 21, 2017 by David BergslandJune 21, 2017

Creative Pro has a good article today about titling fonts. Book design needs titling fonts to make your chapter heads, section titles, and such much better looking, easier to read, and provide a more comfortable reading experience. In general, titling fonts use letterspacing which is too tight to be used at body copy sizes. They are carefully crafted to be more elegant. And often they are condensed—though I usually don’t do that. Book design needs titling fonts & … Continue reading →

A FontLab 5 webinar perusal for kicks

Skilled Workman Posted on June 10, 2017 by David BergslandJune 10, 2017

I ran across this FontLab 5 webinar perusal on YouTube today. The recording quality is poor. But it might be helpful. At least there’s a bit of a face and voice with the name. The basics of a Fontlab workflow: new font

Self-publishers trade publishing dreams need excellence

Skilled Workman Posted on June 1, 2017 by David BergslandJune 1, 2017

Self-publishers trade publishing dreams need excellence to provide better hopes. There are realistic, if remote, possibilities of being picked up by a “real” publisher. But only if you can demonstrate excellent sales, a sizable following, or ongoing usage (like coursework, regularly scheduled seminars, and the like). I thought the image of Victorian woodtype might help drive home the concept of tradepub being a step back to a time which really doesn’t exist any more. Traditional publishing as we … Continue reading →

Biblia, Biblia Serif, new book production fonts

Skilled Workman Posted on February 16, 2017 by David BergslandFebruary 16, 2017

Today I’m pleased to announce that Hackberry Font Foundry has released Biblia, Biblia Serif, new book production fonts for my friends. This is specifically designed for my cohorts, writers and publishers of Christian fiction and non-fiction. That’s why they are named Biblia. I’m working on a companion sans named Draetha, which is Welsh for preach. These fonts have a long history. In the early nineties, I fell in love with the look of a font named Minister. I … Continue reading →

Briskly: new font release for Fall 2016

Skilled Workman Posted on September 26, 2016 by David BergslandSeptember 26, 2016

I’ve put this off for years, but it just seemed time. Briskly: new font release is a font made from one sample of my handwriting. An ASCII font (256-character), it will work well for desktop, Web, and ePUB. The only place you will be able to buy it with included ebook licenses is here on this Website. Briskly: new font release is here! There are some interesting aspects to this font. First, some of the characters have a unique slant … Continue reading →

Converting Books to Ebooks with InDesign CC

Skilled Workman Posted on September 16, 2016 by David BergslandSeptember 16, 2016

Book designers often dread converting books to ebooks — the process of changing a greyscale printed book to various full-color ebooks: downloadable PDFs, ePUB FXL and Reflow, & Kindle books of various flavors from e-ink to large Fire tablet. It often seems a bit like wizard work requiring incantations, lots of smoke, and mirrors. Sad to say, on the Kindle end of things, that’s fairly accurate. Yet things are not as they seem, as InDesign CC has … Continue reading →

Keeping your mind open to creative typographic solutions

Skilled Workman Posted on May 10, 2016 by David BergslandMay 10, 2016

One of the main troubles we have in setting books for readability is the set of largely subconscious rules we’ve learned over the years. In an entertaining and useful article today by Jonathan Hoefler named: How to Use Clashing Fonts He gives us several examples showing why it is necessary to break common “rules” in the interest of both style and readability. In the example he gives above, he shows the use of two virtually identical Dutch Old … Continue reading →
