Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap

Skilled Workman Posted on January 15, 2018 by David BergslandJanuary 15, 2018

The Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap. As my new font family, Boxy, rolls out there is a wonderful intro offer on Fontspring. It currently available at MyFonts, FontSpring, Creative market, and here on this site. As many of you know, normal professional pricing on MyFonts, fonts.com, or YouWorkforThem is $24.95 per font and $74.95 for the four-font family. The FontSpring price is exceptional. Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap Until mid-February, their price is … Continue reading →

A FontLab 5 webinar perusal for kicks

Skilled Workman Posted on June 10, 2017 by David BergslandJune 10, 2017

I ran across this FontLab 5 webinar perusal on YouTube today. The recording quality is poor. But it might be helpful. At least there’s a bit of a face and voice with the name. The basics of a Fontlab workflow: new font

Biblia, Biblia Serif, new book production fonts

Skilled Workman Posted on February 16, 2017 by David BergslandFebruary 16, 2017

Today I’m pleased to announce that Hackberry Font Foundry has released Biblia, Biblia Serif, new book production fonts for my friends. This is specifically designed for my cohorts, writers and publishers of Christian fiction and non-fiction. That’s why they are named Biblia. I’m working on a companion sans named Draetha, which is Welsh for preach. These fonts have a long history. In the early nineties, I fell in love with the look of a font named Minister. I … Continue reading →

Quick and easy letterspacing in FontLab

Skilled Workman Posted on May 15, 2015 by David BergslandMay 15, 2015

I decided to post this. It’s part of my new book, Practical Font Design Streamlined. I found as I was recording the videos for My Udemy course, Practical Font Design, that I had gradually developed a new, much faster, and more efficient workflow for designing fonts. It takes what was in the original three editions of Practical Font Design to a whole new level. This post is going to offer some pieces which will be referenced in the new book. … Continue reading →

Variable type for ebooks?

Skilled Workman Posted on January 24, 2015 by David BergslandJanuary 24, 2015

There have been rumors around for several years now that multiple master fonts might not be gone completely, or that a new solution might be in the works. Nick Sherman wrote a long, but exciting article about the new possibilities on A List Apart. Superpolator (on the left) shows some exciting possibilities. My personal hope is for OpenType features in ePUBs. Variable type has some big guns behind it Recently, Adam Twardoch made a proposal along these same … Continue reading →

Creating OpenType Fonts: Simplified

Skilled Workman Posted on November 9, 2011 by David BergslandJanuary 29, 2016

OpenType Simplified In two words, it’s confusing. FontLab has good, professional tools for developing OpenType fonts—but it is certainly not simple or easy. Fontographer really does not deal well with OpenType at all. Having said that, if you have a feature file, you can use it in Fontographer 5.1. You link to it in the font info dialog box on the Encoding page. Fontographer will use that feature file to build your OpenType font when you generate … Continue reading →

Fontographer: Practical Font Design for Graphic Designers

Skilled Workman Posted on October 22, 2011 by David BergslandOctober 22, 2011

Why do you want to use Fontographer? For the fun of it! When I received the opportunity to go back to my roots, and see what the new Fontographer was like, I was a little concerned. I had just spent nine years painfully teaching myself to letterspace by hand, to write OpenType features, and to become accustomed to the tool set of FontLab. Don’t get me wrong, FontLab is a great program and I am … Continue reading →
