First course of book production has been released

Skilled Workman Posted on August 4, 2017 by David BergslandSeptember 12, 2017

Today, my first course of book production has been released. I’m building video coursework for using InDesign to produce books on Udemy starting with basic typography. Actually we start with the very beginning, where you must choose: Book size Margins Column width And more This first course of book production lays a solid foundation This is the largest lack in most self-published books today. Much of it is not the fault of the author or designer—it’s the tools they are using. … Continue reading →

New release! Practical Font Design With FontLab 5

Skilled Workman Posted on January 15, 2016 by David BergslandJanuary 15, 2016

I’m looking for reviewers Click the headline above and let me know what format you want. I recommend the PDF in spreads or the ePUB FXL [also in spreads]. This way you can get the formatting advantages of the print version in digital form. This is especially true if you have one of the earlier editions. I need feedback on the superiority of the new workflow. I know it works much better for me. I need to … Continue reading →

New version of InDesign CC 2015.2 released today!

Skilled Workman Posted on December 1, 2015 by David BergslandDecember 1, 2015

Click on the image to find links to download the free trial, buy a subscription, or whatever. This is always a big day for me. I’ve been working getting ready for the changes, so I can help you with any questions. Again, this go-round, there’s not much for book production. OpenType and Glyph Features There are new features to help with OpenType glyph choices. They are available from the Font Menu, from contextual menus when selecting characters [right-click], and there’s … Continue reading →

InDesign CC 2015 offers paragraph shading in ePUBs

Skilled Workman Posted on June 16, 2015 by David BergslandJune 16, 2015

Another incremental release? Of course… But that’s to be expected. The whole paradigm of the subscription model is that the applications keep getting better and you get an automatic update as soon as it is released. There’s been a huge amount of work put into InDesign CC (2015), but most of it does not apply to us: producers of the artwork published as books in print and as ebooks. However, one of the new abilities is very helpful. It … Continue reading →

Skilled Workman Posted on May 2, 2011 by David BergslandMay 2, 2011

InDesign 7.5 On-Demand. I just released the 2nd edition of InDesign On-Demand. I will update the copy for the rest of the first edition. In this new paradigm, procedures, capabilities, and options are still changing weekly or more often than that.

Work it out with awe and reverence!

Skilled Workman Posted on August 22, 2010 by David BergslandAugust 22, 2010

This is an excerpt from my new book, “Finding the Power to Believe”. Philippians Verse 2:12 “Therefore, as you have always obeyed, not only when I was there but also now that I am not, work out your salvation in deep reverence and careful caution” [MVP] This is serious stuff. You need to be on guard, watching and cooperating with the Lord. It is a work—it doesn’t just happen magically overnight. It will take you the rest … Continue reading →

A major new release at Hackberry Font Foundry

Skilled Workman Posted on July 6, 2010 by David BergslandJuly 6, 2010

Announcing this all over You may have seen this already, but it is a major piece of work and probably my most mature and sophisticated set of font designs yet. I finally broke down and spaced them for body copy—so they will work well at text sizes [from 9-point to 12-point] without the need to fiddle with the spacing. The design is a contemporary take on oldstyle serif typefaces using Jenson as the mask. The roots of … Continue reading →

eBooks & ePUB: multi-channel releases

Skilled Workman Posted on June 27, 2010 by David BergslandJune 27, 2010

One of the interesting things about the new paradigm of publishing is the lack of exclusivity. As I publish works for Radiqx and clients, I am continually struck by how many places I normally release things. My norm now is to start with Lulu, then do a Createspace version, then make an html version for Kindle, then a Word version for Smashwords, an ePUB version on Lulu for iPad, a PDF of one of the versions for … Continue reading →

Hackberry New Releases: Acadami, Cutlass, Chunkie

Skilled Workman Posted on March 18, 2010 by David BergslandMarch 18, 2010

Hackberry Font Foundry has released three fonts since the first of the year. They’ve all had a good response, and they’re all on sale until the early April. Acadami is working well as a book font and on sale until April 2 for $9. It’s up to  38 on the Starlets list of the old site, and 58th on the hot new fonts list on the new site. Cutlass is just fun and up to 26 on the … Continue reading →

Practical Font Design: Parts #1-3 Proof by David Bergsland (Book) in Arts & Photography

Skilled Workman Posted on July 6, 2009 by David BergslandJuly 6, 2009

Practical Font Design: Parts #1-3 Proof by David Bergsland (Book) in Arts & Photography. We just published a beta proof of the first three parts of the upcoming book called, “Practical Font Design”. It’s a guide to using FontLab to make fonts for yourself as a graphic designer who loves type. It will also be used as a sourcebook for apprentices of Hackberry Fonts. Their hope is that by providing the proof at the heavily discounted price … Continue reading →

This site uses the pseudonyms of Bergsland Design for design work; and Radiqx Press for publishing. Both of these have been used for some time beginning in the past millennium. The Skilled Workman was begun in 2011 dealing with spiritual teachings about our Messiah and the Holy Spirit he sent to us to help us. If you want to meet Jesus, click here.
