The Kindle fixed layout software moves books

Skilled Workman Posted on April 23, 2015 by David BergslandApril 23, 2015

As I mentioned a while ago, I made textbook versions of my two best sellers: Practical Font Design and Writing in InDesign. The process was very simple and easy. I just uploaded the PDF I had developed for download. It had a bit of color added, but it is basically the print version slightly optimized for viewing on-screen. The conversion was very fast and seemingly flawless. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, it’s just a wrapped PDF so far, with … Continue reading →

Marketing tips for fiction and non-fiction: it takes time

Skilled Workman Posted on March 23, 2015 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2015

Joel rarely writes for his blog any more, but it is a treat when he does. Today’s article is an excellent example of why his blog is so good: clean, concise, and useful. We can boil down the advice to the following: Fiction authors are unknown Fiction is marketed to a much wider audience who is initially unknown by the author. The new author  needs to work very hard on becoming known. Giving away books is essential as … Continue reading →

Make more with five book sets than 5 single books

Skilled Workman Posted on March 3, 2015 by David BergslandMarch 3, 2015

I was talking to my author friend, Guy Stanton III, today and he shared this with me. Many of you already know this, but it’s worth a mention anyway. You know what’s really ironic, David, about combining all the books into one boxed set? I will make more money on the sale of the boxed set than if I had sold the entire series individually, but what’s even cooler is that the customer is going to pay … Continue reading →

Ebooks have made a major leap in quality

Skilled Workman Posted on February 10, 2015 by David BergslandFebruary 17, 2015

For example, I got this official word today: “Yes, Kobo now accepts FXL EPUBs exported from InDesign and they can be put on sale, they have confirmed the same. The FXL EPUB output from ID also renders correctly on a Kobo device.” Now that is certainly good news which is to be added with the existing iBooks acceptance of ePUB3 books. But the real change has happened more subtly. All distributors now accept ebooks with embedded fonts I … Continue reading →

The state of publishing is becoming a bit more predictable

Skilled Workman Posted on May 1, 2014 by David BergslandMay 1, 2014

Shatzin has an excellent post today. He still sees the development of larger and larger publishers resulting in a global dominance of someone. Online book sales are inevitably going to increase their percentage. There will be a larger separation between books of text and books with graphics. Much more: you should read the article.

Book Production speed becomes more important…

Skilled Workman Posted on February 19, 2014 by David BergslandFebruary 19, 2014

Mark Coker makes the following prediction for 2014: Production takes on increased importance in 2014 – One of the most important secrets to ebook publishing success is to write more books. As a writer, your writing is your unique creation. It’s your product. Authors who write great books (and produce more of them), are the authors who build sales and platform the fastest, because each new book represents an opportunity to please existing fans and hook new … Continue reading →

One main benefit to self-publishing and ebooks: unlimited shelf life

Skilled Workman Posted on December 7, 2013 by David BergslandDecember 7, 2013

Here’s a quote from my new book, Writing In InDesign CC, due out soon. I don’t know about you, but I tend forget this in the heat of the moment as I am launching a new book. “Sales continue to grow: Unless you are publishing very unique time-limited work, on-demand sales slowly grow and continue to grow. Because there are no warehousing issues, there are no reasons to stop selling your books. In many cases, your sales will … Continue reading →

Why embedded fonts matter for your ebooks

Skilled Workman Posted on September 9, 2013 by David BergslandSeptember 9, 2013

Today I want to talk about an area of ePUB and Kindle design which is never mentioned. The reason it is not mentioned is that only iBooks and Kindle Fire have the capability. There are a few peripheral apps that can: Bluefire on the iPad & Readium on Chrome, plus there may be more on Android, but I have no way to test that. There is a huge difference between the two options   You can clearly … Continue reading →

New Release: InDesign Ebooks Conversions, 2nd Edition

Skilled Workman Posted on August 7, 2013 by David BergslandSeptember 13, 2013

Updating the ebook conversions techniques to InDesign CC Your book is ready to print How do I produce my ebooks? Here’s a set of workable techniques: InDesign Ebook Conversions for $2.99 If you had enough sense to fully format your book in InDesign, the answer to how to make ebooks is “easily, though not simply”. The largest problem most graphic designers have is that this whole “ebook thing” is a confusing mishmash of options and possibilities. This book … Continue reading →
