Pictures on Kindle remains a crap shoot

Skilled Workman Posted on October 1, 2015 by David BergslandOctober 1, 2015

I don’t do this as often as I should (read other people’s books on self-publishing). It’s not because I don’t think they have good things to offer. Mainly it’s the result of a reasoning and a fact. First, I don’t want to accidentally plagiarize someone while writing. So, I tend to keep others’ writing out of the memory banks. Second, most non-fiction on book publishing is far too expensive for my little budget. But I picked up a copy … Continue reading →

Enhanced typesetting and new inaccessible Kindle format?

Skilled Workman Posted on September 22, 2015 by David BergslandSeptember 22, 2015

Back to scratching mud Aaron Shepherd is convinced that this is true. The .kfx (which Aaron believes stands for .kf10) is a post-uploading process done to your books over the first month or two after uploading. What it means as far as he is concerned is this: In practical terms, this means there is no longer any effective way to proof your book before or after publication. You can get it looking absolutely perfect in a KDP proof, and … Continue reading →

More on Kindle Problems…

Skilled Workman Posted on September 4, 2015 by David BergslandSeptember 4, 2015

A continuation of the Kindle formatting issues On one of the Facebook groups I participate in, there’s been some general poo-pahing over my most recent posting on the problems with Kindle formatting. I can understand it because many in that group only upload very simple novels. But the problem may be worse than I thought. So, I thought I better give some samples. In the process I found that Kindle has indeed destroyed the Kindle version of this … Continue reading →

Is it time to bail on Kindle?

Skilled Workman Posted on September 4, 2015 by David BergslandSeptember 4, 2015

Aaron Shephard is close to giving up in Kindle. [You may need to search as I could not find a post-specific link.] He’s found evidence that Amazon might, and probably will, destroy your formatting well after it has been published. As you can read below about the new KFX format, Amazon simply does that to your book. It’s out of our control and we have been given no tools to produce KFX files.   I suspected all of this, … Continue reading →

Readability is the prime virtue of book design

Skilled Workman Posted on July 28, 2015 by David BergslandJuly 28, 2015

I decided I needed to beat an old drum. Readability is the focus of book design typography. This was the core of curriculum in my digital publishing degree. It’s the center of my graphic design and book design efforts. Without comfortable, readable content, your book has a severe handicap. What is readability? This is all about book design typography. Here’s a little graphic to show you some of the things that influence how easily you can read a … Continue reading →

A good article on kerning in InDesign magazine for July

Skilled Workman Posted on July 6, 2015 by David BergslandJuly 6, 2015

Kerning is that area of typography rarely talked about. Ilene Strizver has a good article on kerning, both what it is and how to accomplish it, in the July issue of InDesign magazine. One of the sure signs of a pro book designer is in the kerning of the heads and subheads. That along with solid widow, orphan, and runt control are major areas of page layout normally ignored completely by users of Words. Of course, the sad … Continue reading →

Some concerns before installing CC (2015)

Skilled Workman Posted on June 16, 2015 by David BergslandJune 16, 2015

InDesign Secrets has an important posting today. There are some concerns with the new update. Minor stuff. It uninstalls all earlier versions by default That can be fixed by unchecking Remove old versions in the Advanced Options in the CC app install dialog. Mac users must be running 10.9 or 10.10 It may not even update with the older OSes.

InDesign CC 2015 offers paragraph shading in ePUBs

Skilled Workman Posted on June 16, 2015 by David BergslandJune 16, 2015

Another incremental release? Of course… But that’s to be expected. The whole paradigm of the subscription model is that the applications keep getting better and you get an automatic update as soon as it is released. There’s been a huge amount of work put into InDesign CC (2015), but most of it does not apply to us: producers of the artwork published as books in print and as ebooks. However, one of the new abilities is very helpful. It … Continue reading →

Writing a book title that works

Skilled Workman Posted on May 11, 2015 by David BergslandFebruary 5, 2018

To the left, you see the cover of a book I wrote which includes some of this information. Marketing your book seems too difficult. One of the major problems is the book title. Many things go into writing a book title that works. But it is an issue I’ve been pondering recently. The basic questions are: Who are you & what is your book? If you are like the rest of us, you’ve discovered (or soon will) that your … Continue reading →

Are you an author, for real?

Skilled Workman Posted on May 1, 2015 by David BergslandMay 1, 2015

I just read an excellent article in CreativePro called Are you a creative professional or a hobbyist?  The article is talking about graphic designers, but it equally speaks to authors and writers. The dividing line is the tools you use Every day I see questions on FaceBook, Google+, and the author groups and forums in which I participate. They are all basically the same. How can I do this or that without bothering to learn how? It’s usually written with … Continue reading →
