Review: iBooks Author, the hope fades

Skilled Workman Posted on February 14, 2012 by David BergslandFebruary 14, 2012

I spent much of last weekend designing a book in iBooks Author. It was a horrendous experience. But then the application wasn’t designed for my use. A book design tool for amateurs giving away free books First of all, I must mention that the process of dialing back from InDesign to less than Pages is a huge leap backwards. Like Liz Castro, I was excited about the possibilities suggested by the hype. She found ten reasons why … Continue reading →

Why I switched back to Fontographer 5.1

Skilled Workman Posted on September 13, 2011 by David BergslandSeptember 13, 2011

Personally, I started in Fontographer in the early 1990s and gradually built a little sideline of designing fonts. They were selling a little on Myfonts. When OpenType became viable with the release of InDesign I needed to find something else. My old version of Fontographer would not run in Mac OSX very well. Thomas Phinney, then of Adobe, told me I had no option but to go to FontLab. This transformed my career. I learned how to write … Continue reading →

Writing in InDesign gives you layout power

Skilled Workman Posted on September 2, 2011 by David BergslandSeptember 2, 2011

I’ve been working on a new expanded version of “Writing In InDesign” for my peers in ministry. (I haven’t figured out how to add the updates into the first edition.) I may write “Drawing In InDesign” first. Then I’ll do a radically expanded 2nd edition of “Writing In InDesign”—but that’s all in flux. I also received this in an email this morning: From Don in Colorado: I was up until 3:am reading Writing in InDesign. I can tell you’ve put … Continue reading →

Thank you for the trial, Lord

Skilled Workman Posted on July 24, 2011 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2020

Thank you for the trial , Lord. I was listening to John Hagee this morning. He was on one of his wonderful tirades again about the glory of Jesus. But then he slipped into something I have heard over and over since becoming a believer as I studied scripture. Sadly, I rarely hear it from the pulpit. Rejoice in your trials Maybe the NASB puts it better: exult in our tribulations [Romans 5:3]. Pastor Hagee was talking about … Continue reading →

My newest book: Writing in InDesign

Skilled Workman Posted on July 14, 2011 by David BergslandNovember 19, 2012

Check out my page on the book This book has been replaced by “Writing In InDesign Revised Edition 2.5” This first edition, first formatting of the new book is no longer available available on Amazon. It includes many of the recent postings on this blog, plus more help for authors writing in InDesign (version 7.5 especially). I’m convinced that InDesign is best place to write. Read and find out why that is true and how it can … Continue reading →

Editing ePUBs

Skilled Workman Posted on June 21, 2011 by David BergslandJune 21, 2011

One of my largest frustrations with desgining ePUBs has been the difficulty of decompressing and recompressing them to edit the CSS. Today on one of the groups I work with I was sent this:   Because of the problem with the mimetype-compression, rearchiving is on the Mac only via Terminal or via script possible. One Script is called ePUB Zip 1.0.2.   This script works very well. Just Google it, and download it. It would be a … Continue reading →
