Book typography: The reality of picking fonts

Skilled Workman Posted on May 3, 2016 by David BergslandMay 4, 2016

The basic parts of type Again, we need some more basic language definitions. You can see above how the point size of the type relates to the ascender, cap height, x-height, baseline, and descender. More importantly, you get a glimpse of things that are important in the world of typography. This illustration is from my font design book, Practical Font Design With FontLab 5, which is available in print as well as ebooks at iBookstore, NookBooks, Kobo, Scribd, and … Continue reading →

Is Kindle worse or just archaic?

Skilled Workman Posted on April 22, 2016 by David BergslandApril 22, 2016

Mumble, grumble, PITA, ;oebpa;b/ hkvo… Ok! Now that’s off my chest. I just had fits with a Kindle book for a client. I use to do them first (after the print/PDF versions were complete) because they were such a pain in the a…, but I’ve begun doing them last because they’re just bleah. Working with Kindle formatting seems like stepping back a decade. For me, the ePUB problems have largely been solved: paragraph shading, anchored graphics, embedded … Continue reading →

Book Publishing With InDesign CC: Spiral-bound

Skilled Workman Posted on April 19, 2016 by David BergslandApril 19, 2016

Even after over forty-five years, there’s still that little thrill when you see a finished book for the first time. It’s too bad that Amazon won’t carry them. But, they are the best choice for the classroom or self-study. The spiral-bound workbook I had to cut out the Christian marketing section to get the page count below the 470 page maximum for spiral-bound. The only thing I really miss are the color graphics. To get that (and … Continue reading →

A free sample of “Book Publishing With InDesign CC” is available

Skilled Workman Posted on April 8, 2016 by David BergslandApril 11, 2016

I’ve published a sample of the new book on the Adobe servers. It’s about 75 pages of the various sections of the book. If you are interested in a review copy I recommend the PDF is reader’s spreads with the full color graphics. Let me know if you are interested. Here’s a link to the page with more information and purchase links. If word processor book production is taking up too much time and the results are … Continue reading →

Page Layout Part Six: Designing body copy styles

Skilled Workman Posted on March 15, 2016 by David BergslandMarch 15, 2016

Body copy styles The first formatting decisions I will be talking about are for the body copy. This is what Word calls Normal. Many of the Word docs you get to setup will be entirely locally formatted Normal. It is the main content of your book, and it must be comfortable to read. This paragraph style is what produces that smooth type color you need for the background against which the contrasting heads and subheads stand out. … Continue reading →

Page Layout Part 5: Graphic needs of the formats

Skilled Workman Posted on March 10, 2016 by David BergslandMarch 26, 2016

Graphic needs for Print, PDF, ePUB, & Kindle KFX For book publishing, what you need to understand about graphics is how usage varies in the different formats. You’ll need to hand-adjust to produce the graphics for the various formats. Automation causes many problems. I’m just going to list the four options and their requirements, best formats, and so on. Greyscale print with color cover Lulu & Createspace, plus professional on-demand like Lightning source: You need to be careful. … Continue reading →

Basic page layout part four: Getting them to read it

Skilled Workman Posted on March 5, 2016 by David BergslandMarch 5, 2016

Before I get started with this, I need remind you about the goal: a beautiful book which is comfortable to read.  You need a customized set of styles to enable you to keep your book consistent and give you global control over the entire book as you format. Excellent typography is only possible if you understand how to design paragraphs. Styles make paragraph design possible. We will deal with them conceptually, but you should know this is … Continue reading →

Cover design: A wonderful crosshatching video for ink drawing…

Skilled Workman Posted on February 27, 2016 by David BergslandFebruary 27, 2016

I found this today, going through my emails. It is beautiful and wonderful. About five minutes… Dan Nelson’s delightful Cross Hatching library teaching ink illustration Does this take a lot of time? Duh! Is it satisfying? Yes. How does it compare to knitting, embroidery, painting, and all the rest? It’s just another opportunity to learn to get in touch with the things which matter in your life. It can be cathartic therapy, all the way to gentle … Continue reading →

Basic page layout: Part One, Book size

Skilled Workman Posted on February 26, 2016 by David BergslandFebruary 26, 2016

As I get ready to release my new book, Self-Publishing With InDesign CC, I want to share some of the basic ideas in the book. Self-publishers rarely know page layout standards So, this little series will help with some of those basic decisions you need to make. Setting up your book to be read: One of the more daunting aspects of book design for the inexperienced is page layout. Most people have Word experience and as I have said … Continue reading →

Studying poster design to help your covers

Skilled Workman Posted on February 24, 2016 by David BergslandFebruary 24, 2016

CREATIVE PRO HAS AN EXCELLENT ARTICLE TODAY on poster design. I mention this because authors without the trained eye of the designer make embarrassing design mistakes because this knowledge is not part of their understanding. Self-publishers must train their eyes Books like Ellen’s shown above are a real help as you expand your knowledge beyond the narrow confines of writing and editing. What writers are normally not aware of is the constant visual input which is the … Continue reading →
