The distraction of COVID-19 fear is foolishness

Skilled Workman Posted on March 29, 2020 by David BergslandMarch 29, 2020

The distraction of COVID-19 fear is foolishness. I’m not saying that the virus is not dangerous. You should be following the CDC guidelines. But the fear is foolishness. Life in the flesh is a terminal condition. Your flesh is going to die. There have only been two men in history whose flesh did not die: Enoch and Ezekiel. This is nothing new and the death of your flesh is no big deal. Unless, of course, you have … Continue reading →

Meeting Jesus today an introduction

Skilled Workman Posted on March 24, 2020 by David BergslandJanuary 23, 2025

Meeting Jesus today is an introduction to the most amazing man who ever lived. He’s so incredible that He took down all the external barriers. No one can stop you. Even the requirements from you are very simple. Here they are in a list. 1: You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God. He earned the power to forgive you of all your sin, as the only sinless man—who died on the cross to save you. … Continue reading →

By retaining comprehensive Godly focus we’re fruitful

Skilled Workman Posted on September 8, 2019 by David BergslandSeptember 8, 2019

Because His imminent return grows closer, retaining comprehensive Godly focus becomes even more important. In our Western civilization, the pressures to lose our sense of reality have become nearly overwhelming. You need to work on that. After 45+ years of walking with Jesus, I still need to work on it often. Reality?! What’s that? Here I may lose several of you. If you have not realized yet that scripture is literally true, you need to talk with … Continue reading →

Book marketing sanely gets attention the old-fashioned way

Skilled Workman Posted on April 16, 2018 by David BergslandJune 2, 2020

It seems like book marketing sanely gets attention the old-fashioned way with well-written content. Sarah, in her blog Marketing Christian Books, has an interesting post this morning called How to get more attention for your books. The idea of intense, seemingly unnatural, social campaigns may be slowly passing away. Don’t get too excited though. The idea that search engines are pulling back in front of social media is no real surprise. However, it remains true that this applies more to … Continue reading →

2018 publishing realities are no surprise

Skilled Workman Posted on December 13, 2017 by David BergslandDecember 13, 2017

The 2018 publishing realities are no surprise to any of us who have been working and keeping track of sales, books, and so on. Traditional publishers believe they’ve whipped the self-publishing problem. But though there is some stability, they are ignoring many key facts. Mike Shatzkin gives us some insight Here’s a quote from today’s post. He sees tradpub missing the elephant in the dining room—Amazon One “tell” is that Amazon doesn’t believe ebook sales are reducing, they … Continue reading →

Get domains set up well for your author platform

Skilled Workman Posted on July 16, 2017 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2020

Here’s an excellent article about the domains needed for your author platform. Get domains set up well as early as possible. It’s one of your major decisions and needs to be done as early in the process as you can manage. Get domains set up well! Your entire marketing effort is built on your domains. That’s the source of your Facebook posts, your tweets, your pins, and so on. They are all ephemeral. Your website/blog is relatively stable … Continue reading →

The importance of designed books in the self-published future

Skilled Workman Posted on June 15, 2017 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2020

I read an excellent article this morning on the importance of designed books. Actually, the article does not mention books, but the concepts apply. Here’s a quote from the interviewee, Dave Snyder Design in the most classic sense is a potent business strategy. That’s not to say it’s only about business efficiency. Everything needs a high level of craft, but even that can’t put lipstick on a pig and make people believe the pig is not a pig. … Continue reading →

Printing consolidation necessary to survive

Skilled Workman Posted on July 13, 2016 by David BergslandJuly 13, 2016

Printing consolidation necessary: Xerox buying R.R. Donnelley This is all part of the consolidation necessary to make these hugely expensive presses run. Hardware prices make printing consolidation necessary. The article in Publishing Executive only covers magazines. But it goes much further than that. In my world, everything is on-demand. This includes the on-demand presses, and the four ereaders: Kindle, iPad/Phone, Nook, & Kobo. We’ll see this change here also. Someone will take on Ingram, just like someone will take … Continue reading →

Color e-ink paperwhite: coming soon?

Skilled Workman Posted on May 26, 2016 by David BergslandMay 26, 2016

Gizmag has an interesting article today about color e-Ink. They claim it will not have any impact on ereaders. I hope they are wrong. Paperwhites, and their ilk, are one of the largest drags of ebook publishing today. They are great for simple novels and white papers. They are quite bad for non-fiction with its need for complex lists, large tables, color images, and so on. Color e-ink could bring the most popular ereaders to a new … Continue reading →

Is Kindle worse or just archaic?

Skilled Workman Posted on April 22, 2016 by David BergslandApril 22, 2016

Mumble, grumble, PITA, ;oebpa;b/ hkvo… Ok! Now that’s off my chest. I just had fits with a Kindle book for a client. I use to do them first (after the print/PDF versions were complete) because they were such a pain in the a…, but I’ve begun doing them last because they’re just bleah. Working with Kindle formatting seems like stepping back a decade. For me, the ePUB problems have largely been solved: paragraph shading, anchored graphics, embedded … Continue reading →
