The Chadash Chronicles: Fool’s Errand & Mystic’s Mayhem

Skilled Workman Posted on November 29, 2013 by David BergslandNovember 29, 2013

An impressive bit of high fantasy ††††† [I don’t have stars in this font] Or so I’m told. When David gave me copies to review he said something to the effect that as far as he knew I didn’t like high fantasy. That may well be true—especially the heathen versions of the same. I remember moving on to other genres because of all the nasty themes present in the books I was finding in the early 1970s. But … Continue reading →

Don’t toss your Pages 09! It’s needed to open RTF files

Skilled Workman Posted on November 28, 2013 by David BergslandNovember 28, 2013

One of the more irritating things about Mavericks is how some capabilities have been lost in the transition to newness. I do like the new free versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. I like them a whole lot more than Office, for sure. But some puzzling things have appeared. The one which affects me the most is the inability of the new Pages to open RTF files. This doesn’t sound too bad, but many of the word.docs … Continue reading →

Lightning Source: the pro’s choice for POD?

Skilled Workman Posted on November 18, 2013 by David BergslandNovember 18, 2013

The image is meaningless fill. I received this comment from Michael W. Perry, Inkling Books, Auburn, AL. I’ve been wanting a guest posting on this for a while, so I am appropriating his comments for that purpose. I’ve never dealt with LS. I never have the budget. But it is definitely the pros’ choice. Lightning Source is the print-on-demand supplier for the traditional publishers. Many authors find it very difficult to deal with, but Mike, like me, has … Continue reading →

Questions from authors about publishing their book

Skilled Workman Posted on November 16, 2013 by David BergslandNovember 16, 2013

I received this email a couple days ago. It is typical of the type of questions I get from every author for whom I either publish their book or produce the digital artwork for their book so they can publish it. The only proviso is that I only publish books for authors I know, for books that I like. I’m a fairly radical Christian, so I expect any books I publish will promote the Gospel, be a … Continue reading →

Desktop, laptop, or tablet?

Skilled Workman Posted on October 25, 2013 by David BergslandOctober 25, 2013

I found a good article today which explains many of the issues. My main issue with the conclusions is that I cannot be productive with a laptop. If you are just writing, an iPad with Apple’s wireless keyboard will do the job for you very well. The article misses my most important category of software apps: the Creative Cloud. My two most used apps [outside of Mail and Safari], are InDesign and Photoshop. I can easily see that … Continue reading →

One of the hopes for the local bookstore…

Skilled Workman Posted on October 19, 2013 by David BergslandOctober 19, 2013

Forbes has a fun article called:   The Man Who Took on Amazon and Saved a Bookstore It is this type of technology which will let the local bookstore compete against Amazon. The Expresso Book Machine can publish out-of-print titles and much more. Of course, Createspace can do this also. It will be interesting to see how Expresso develops. I’m checking it out to see if they will list my books. For those not familiar, the Expresso … Continue reading →

The ePUB3 hype: I thought we were talking about books?

Skilled Workman Posted on October 8, 2013 by David BergslandOctober 8, 2013

From the Shatzin files this morning: “I think the questioner in this case was also trying to pull us into a discussion of video, audio, interaction, and linking, which I resist for two reasons. One is that, so far, the preponderence of ebooks that have sold any appreciable quantities have not had any of those attributes. They’re just the same words as in the printed books made reflowable for a screen. The second is that my world … Continue reading →

Book Production Services

Skilled Workman Posted on September 14, 2013 by David BergslandSeptember 14, 2013

I regularly provide production help to Christian authors, as led by the Spirit. Feel free to contact me. What I want to do below is give you some idea of the options I offer. We can also negotiate custom relationships. Radiqx Press Production Charges Most of my books are done as a whole, so editing, proofing, formatting, exporting for upload are all part of the same process. I normally charge $60/hour for my billable time. To prepare a … Continue reading →

A link to a typographic poster

Skilled Workman Posted on September 12, 2013 by David BergslandSeptember 12, 2013

This infographic shows a lot of what goes into a good font. More than that it enables you to talk about it. I do not agree with all of it. But it is very good. For example, for me aperture is about the openness of the c, s, and characters like that. The poster calls the opening of the u the aperture. We’re probably both right. It’s copyrighted or I’d put it in this posting and talk … Continue reading →
