New Review: Writing In InDesign: A Philosophy for Writers In Service to Readers

Skilled Workman Posted on July 20, 2012 by David BergslandJuly 20, 2012

Today we have a guest post from a man who is a reader of my work who has become a friend. A while back he told me he was going to write a review. I had no idea he would put so much effort into the attempt. I asked if I could share this and he said to do it. Pastor Dean Williams has been a pastor for over 30 years serving in “a multitude of denominational … Continue reading →

What is On-Demand publishing?

Skilled Workman Posted on July 16, 2012 by David BergslandJuly 16, 2012

The concept of on-demand publishing is simple The printer or distributor stores the book on their hard drive (server farm). It is printed or downloaded only after it is ordered and paid for. So, unless there is a demand, it is not printed or downloaded. Much like just-in-time manufacturing, your book is delivered upon demand. You upload the digital files: They are stored on the servers of the on-demand printer or ebook distributor. They print the document … Continue reading →

You need your own publishing house

Skilled Workman Posted on July 9, 2012 by David BergslandJuly 9, 2012

Having your own publishing house is a decision you need to make In today’s version of the publishing industry, you need one regardless. Even if you sell all your books to the big six, you’ll need a way to market yourself and help your book sales. This is much like the fact that all artists need a studio name. You need a professional interface with the world. On the practical side, you need to think about how … Continue reading →

Self-publishing begins with the fact that you write…

Skilled Workman Posted on June 25, 2012 by David BergslandJune 25, 2012

Where do you start? My assumption is that this is something you are already doing. You have been writing and you have a body of work you want to publish. If you are not writing, you are not a writer. This is not for people who say “I really want to write a book about…” some day in the undefined future. Writing may be cathartic therapy for you. It may be sharing the weirdness of life. It … Continue reading →

What’s your niche? It determines your strategy

Skilled Workman Posted on June 4, 2012 by David BergslandJune 4, 2012

Niche writers to limited markets Here we begin to see the modern reality of publishing. The change is of the same type as we saw with the conversion in television from three, then four, gargantuan mass-market networks to the current reality of thousands of channels on cable and satellite. The same thing has happened in magazines where there are now over 10,000 magazines in the US alone. There are now millions of active blogs. We are currently … Continue reading →

Here’s a really beautiful look at the future of print

Skilled Workman Posted on May 28, 2012 by David BergslandMay 28, 2012

It’s very sad, but very beautiful if you were involved in print. An ultra-nostalgic look at the transition from print to ebook. It laments that ebooks aren’t permanent. But overall it’s a good video and thought-provoking. The future of print…epilogue

Writing in InDesign is a true reader service

Skilled Workman Posted on May 28, 2012 by David BergslandJanuary 10, 2018

Writing within InDesign Here I am again recommending a road less traveled by—not unusual in my life and work. Before the choruses rise up in defense of other workflows, let me tell you my reasonings. I fully recognize that most people write in Word. What these people do not realize [in most cases] is this simple fact starts their book with a great handicap. If Word users are publishing their own book, they are missing out on … Continue reading →

No, No! to double-space and double-returns

Skilled Workman Posted on May 9, 2012 by David BergslandMay 10, 2012

What follows is an excerpt from my new release, Writing In InDesign Second Edition. ******************************** Typography determines reader reactions It goes far beyond your font choices—important as they are. This is the first and most important thing you must understand. You are not only trying to control or at least predict the reaction of your typical reader to your content. You are also working you make your book a comfortable, friendly, and familiar part of the life … Continue reading →

Margins are more important than many think: Make the margins bigger

Skilled Workman Posted on April 28, 2012 by David BergslandApril 28, 2012

Make the margins bigger | I love typography, the typography and fonts blog. The I Love Typography blog is often over the top. Even as a typographer who has focused his career on type—both font design and page layout (the two parts of typography)— this blog is always fun, often beautiful, but commonly irrelevant to my daily work. On the other hand, the item discussed in the posting this morning is critical to excellence in typography. Margins … Continue reading →

InDesign CS6 is all about promises for the future…

Skilled Workman Posted on April 23, 2012 by David BergslandApril 23, 2012

There are many exciting things to be found in the new version of InDesign. But if you read carefully, most of them are focused on an unspecified future where ePUB3 and HTML5 /CSS3 are the normal standards of ebook publishing. They are not now. In fact, there is no ePUB3 reader in common use at this time. In fact, there is really nothing out there for readers of ePUB books. I love CS6. It makes excellent ePUBs. … Continue reading →
