Basic page layout: Part One, Book size

Skilled Workman Posted on February 26, 2016 by David BergslandFebruary 26, 2016

As I get ready to release my new book, Self-Publishing With InDesign CC, I want to share some of the basic ideas in the book. Self-publishers rarely know page layout standards So, this little series will help with some of those basic decisions you need to make. Setting up your book to be read: One of the more daunting aspects of book design for the inexperienced is page layout. Most people have Word experience and as I have said … Continue reading →

New release: Designing ePUBs With InDesign by David Bergsland

Skilled Workman Posted on August 4, 2014 by David BergslandAugust 2, 2014

Ebooks have been a mess until now. Actually, they still are in many ways. However, InDesign CC 2014 has truly solved most of the problems. It always did export the best PDFs. Now it exports very good ePUB FXL (fixed layout), reflowable ePUBs, and because Kindle will upload the reflowables converting easily, the Kindle problem is solved also. Wonderful that all our problems are solved, right? Well, you know better than that. Each format requires a redesign … Continue reading →

InDesign CC ePUBs now handle floating graphics fairly well

Skilled Workman Posted on January 20, 2014 by David BergslandJanuary 20, 2014

There are always going to be complaints. But I can do everything I want to do with anchored graphics right now. With one major exception: It’s hard to predict what will happen with a graphic crossing a page break. If it’s floating, it may just not render. I can understand that. I really don’t have any idea how to handle that. But I can simply change my graphic so it doesn’t float and the page break will … Continue reading →

Multiple linked TOCs in ePUBs for CC

Skilled Workman Posted on May 14, 2013 by David BergslandMay 14, 2013

One of the new changes to InDesign CC is an innocuous checkbox at the bottom of the Table of Contents dialog box for: Make text anchor in source paragraph.
