By retaining comprehensive Godly focus we’re fruitful

Skilled Workman Posted on September 8, 2019 by David BergslandSeptember 8, 2019

Because His imminent return grows closer, retaining comprehensive Godly focus becomes even more important. In our Western civilization, the pressures to lose our sense of reality have become nearly overwhelming. You need to work on that. After 45+ years of walking with Jesus, I still need to work on it often. Reality?! What’s that? Here I may lose several of you. If you have not realized yet that scripture is literally true, you need to talk with … Continue reading →

Christian global warning principles

Skilled Workman Posted on July 19, 2019 by David BergslandJuly 19, 2019

So, how can I explain Christian global warning principles without offense? In this day and age, it may not be possible. People seem to be actively seeking to be offended. Being offended does does not actually require thought. As a believer who takes scripture literally, I do need to affirm that the globe is getting warmer. I’m not surprised. In fact, as Roger Melquist told me, “Of course it’s getting warmer. It has been ever since the … Continue reading →

InDesign CC [2019] shows solid growth

Skilled Workman Posted on November 24, 2018 by David BergslandNovember 24, 2018

As usual, Adobe continues to do good work on their apps. In fact, InDesign CC [2019] shows solid growth which is remarkable on such a mature piece of software. Again, there’s virtually nothing done to help to publish ePUBs and no direct tie-in to KDP. As I’ve said many times, Kindle has fallen behind in many areas. But then most people are publishing straight from Word. I could write pages about such short-sightedness. But it wouldn’t change anything … Continue reading →

MyFont’s next Fontacular worth checking out

Skilled Workman Posted on September 24, 2018 by David BergslandSeptember 23, 2018

This is arguably the best site for paid fonts designed by professionals. Last year [the first year], the sale was excellent. I imagine it will be this year also.

Impatience guilt during transition can be tough

Skilled Workman Posted on September 6, 2018 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2020

I’m reminded again that impatience guilt during transition can be tough. As mentioned, we have just made a huge move, to a brand new town [for us]. Due to many reasons, getting the house set up into a home this time takes far too long. So, I sit here—with a little time to relax and reflect—getting anxious because nothing seems to be happening. Actually, throughout the move, the Lord has been making His presence wonderfully known. We’ve … Continue reading →

Building powerful presentations with type

Skilled Workman Posted on August 30, 2018 by David BergslandAugust 30, 2018

I received a solid article on presentation design this morning. Building powerful presentations with type requires good typographic knowledge and a clear understanding of readability. I don’t think Illene went far enough on some points, but basically, keep it simple and clean with legible fonts. Simple, right? Certainly not! You’re fighting habitual reader/listener issues—boredom, attention deficit, ignorance, and a host of other issues. Your presentation needs to be one of your most powerful tools. You need superior tools—and … Continue reading →

Book marketing sanely gets attention the old-fashioned way

Skilled Workman Posted on April 16, 2018 by David BergslandJune 2, 2020

It seems like book marketing sanely gets attention the old-fashioned way with well-written content. Sarah, in her blog Marketing Christian Books, has an interesting post this morning called How to get more attention for your books. The idea of intense, seemingly unnatural, social campaigns may be slowly passing away. Don’t get too excited though. The idea that search engines are pulling back in front of social media is no real surprise. However, it remains true that this applies more to … Continue reading →

New InDesign update arrives with nice feature upgrades

Skilled Workman Posted on March 16, 2018 by David BergslandMarch 22, 2018

The new InDesign update arrives with more than just a bunch of fixes. It gives us new controls for shading and borders in consecutive paragraphs. You can now export a document as individual page PDFs. There are several other things which might interest you. You can find them at Adobe’s What’s New page. Dealing with consecutive paragraphs As you probably recall, if you had shading or borders applied to consecutive paragraphs, you were forced to have a style … Continue reading →

Believe your book will change lives

Skilled Workman Posted on February 5, 2018 by David BergslandMarch 23, 2020

Susan, at Marketing Christian Books, makes an excellent point this morning—even for non-believers. You have to believe your book will change lives to market it effectively. This is contrary to the publisher’s position which is to believe your book will make them money. That may drive your publisher, but it will not drive your readers. Here’s a quote from Susan: Do I believe that my book has the power to help someone change their life for eternity? … Continue reading →

Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap

Skilled Workman Posted on January 15, 2018 by David BergslandJanuary 15, 2018

The Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap. As my new font family, Boxy, rolls out there is a wonderful intro offer on Fontspring. It currently available at MyFonts, FontSpring, Creative market, and here on this site. As many of you know, normal professional pricing on MyFonts, fonts.com, or YouWorkforThem is $24.95 per font and $74.95 for the four-font family. The FontSpring price is exceptional. Boxy FontSpring introductory offer is really cheap Until mid-February, their price is … Continue reading →
