Things have really changed—free whitepaper. Above is a link to a free PDF about how to publish your book for free in print, downloadable PDF, ePUB on iBooks and NookBooks, Kindle book, and various ebook formats. Included are marketing materials and intensive marketing—all for free. This is the new paradigm of on-demand publishing What has happened with few people noticing is that books have become a creative effort for fine artists and authors of all types. Relative to page, essential for ePUB images

Skilled Workman Posted on April 30, 2011 by David BergslandApril 30, 2011

I’ve been having trouble with images in my ePUBs for well over a year. I was testing again today, and for the book I was working on, changing from fixed size to relative to page made a huge difference on the iPad. I had been using Adobe Digital Editions to make my judgements and fixed size at 300 dpi works a lot better there. But for the iPad, relative to page solved my problems (as long as … Continue reading →

How long is a book?

Skilled Workman Posted on April 27, 2011 by David BergslandApril 27, 2011

I’ll bet you never thought about it. But there are certainly answers that you need to know. This posting was triggered by a post from Sue Collier this morning which stated the following: “What length constitutes a book? It varies widely depending on who you ask. The U.S. Postal Service says you must have at least eight pages to qualify. International postal standards dictate that forty-nine pages is the magic number, not counting the cover. Anything under … Continue reading →

So: you need to provide ministry resources?

Skilled Workman Posted on April 12, 2011 by David BergslandApril 12, 2011

Now there is some real help. InDesign has been the best page layout tool for print for over a decade now. I was blessed to be in on the beta team for version one in 1999. I can remember how excited I was that there was finally a software tool I could use fluently that fit the way I think. Now InDesign 7.5 for the Design Premium suite CS5.5 is here I don’t know when it will … Continue reading →

Why ebooks need typography

Skilled Workman Posted on February 5, 2011 by David BergslandFebruary 5, 2011

What is typography? A good functional definition is very sweet and simple: Typography is the art & craft of making words easy and comfortable to read Some of this has to do with font choices: But ebooks (other than PDF) do not presently allow embedded fonts Some has to do with leading and point size: but ebooks give few controls here, and the readers can butcher that at will A lot has to do with column width: … Continue reading →

This site uses the pseudonyms of Bergsland Design for design work; and Radiqx Press for publishing. Both of these have been used for some time beginning in the past millennium. The Skilled Workman was begun in 2011 dealing with spiritual teachings about our Messiah and the Holy Spirit he sent to us to help us. If you want to meet Jesus, click here.
