Color e-ink paperwhite: coming soon?

Skilled Workman Posted on May 26, 2016 by David BergslandMay 26, 2016

Gizmag has an interesting article today about color e-Ink. They claim it will not have any impact on ereaders. I hope they are wrong. Paperwhites, and their ilk, are one of the largest drags of ebook publishing today. They are great for simple novels and white papers. They are quite bad for non-fiction with its need for complex lists, large tables, color images, and so on. Color e-ink could bring the most popular ereaders to a new … Continue reading →

Does InDesign finally have a strong competitor?

Skilled Workman Posted on April 26, 2016 by David BergslandApril 26, 2016

I’ve always disliked QuarkXPress. Even when it was king of the hill, I was using PageMaker and InDesign 1.0. But there’s no denying that it was King—until it shot itself in the foot. It treated it’s customers very poorly, and its upgrade policies were ridiculously expensive. When InDesign came out with unlimited redoes, OpenType support, no need for a separate frame tool, and dozens of other major features, Quark was left behind, very rapidly. Is InDesign the … Continue reading →

The variety in italic fonts is astounding

Skilled Workman Posted on April 7, 2016 by David BergslandApril 7, 2016

Hoefler&Co. posted an excellent article this morning about italic fonts. It covers a dozen varieties (though it seems like more), plus it explains some of the reasons why italics end up with the designs which seem so far from normal.

New release! Librum Book Design Group font package

Skilled Workman Posted on January 15, 2016 by David BergslandJanuary 15, 2016

This is the release of the fifteen-font package for book design which I developed in the writing of Practical Font Design With FontLab 5. It is a further development of the Contenu/Buddy group. Click here to purchase the Librum Book Design Group The x-heights are larger, it’s slightly narrower, and the general design is a bit more conservative. There is a serif text family, named Librum, for body copy, and a companion serif ebook family, named Librum … Continue reading →

New release! Practical Font Design With FontLab 5

Skilled Workman Posted on January 15, 2016 by David BergslandJanuary 15, 2016

I’m looking for reviewers Click the headline above and let me know what format you want. I recommend the PDF in spreads or the ePUB FXL [also in spreads]. This way you can get the formatting advantages of the print version in digital form. This is especially true if you have one of the earlier editions. I need feedback on the superiority of the new workflow. I know it works much better for me. I need to … Continue reading →

The Training Place of Mankind is out in audio!

Skilled Workman Posted on January 11, 2016 by David BergslandMarch 27, 2020

One of the favorite books I’ve written in the past few years is The Training Place of Mankind: God’s Creation Explained For Normal Folk. It’s a retail read geared toward the bible teacher looking for something more understandable. It’s not rigidly scientific. As far as I am concerned, that battle has been fought and won. If you want more explanations of the content with a couple of reviews, check out the page. The scriptural arguments are compelling It’s a fun … Continue reading →

Skilled Workman Posted on December 1, 2015 by David BergslandDecember 1, 2015

Click on the image to find links to download the free trial, buy a subscription, or whatever. This is always a big day for me. I’ve been working getting ready for the changes, so I can help you with any questions. Again, this go-round, there’s not much for book production. OpenType and Glyph Features There are new features to help with OpenType glyph choices. They are available from the Font Menu, from contextual menus when selecting characters [right-click], and there’s … Continue reading →

New free images from Getty

Skilled Workman Posted on September 25, 2015 by David BergslandSeptember 25, 2015

As you know, most of the free image resources are not worth the time to look through them. The Getty Search Gateway has a huge quantity of images. Getty’s new offering is better than most, because it is well catalogued with a good search engine. Careful! You can waste a lot of time…
