Christian maturity does not happen by default

Skilled Workman Posted on June 11, 2012 by David BergslandJune 11, 2012

Believers tend to assume that growing up is the norm Actually, if you look at the world or the kingdom, you inevitably come to the conclusion that most people never mature. In fact, it is rare for a person to even desire maturity. If you look at entertainment, you can almost use that dogmatic word never. All you find in the movies or on TV is people led around by their physical desires: lust, rage, greed, and … Continue reading →

Here’s a really beautiful look at the future of print

Skilled Workman Posted on May 28, 2012 by David BergslandMay 28, 2012

It’s very sad, but very beautiful if you were involved in print. An ultra-nostalgic look at the transition from print to ebook. It laments that ebooks aren’t permanent. But overall it’s a good video and thought-provoking. The future of print…epilogue

Be careful whom you listen to! Galatians 5:7-9

Skilled Workman Posted on May 7, 2012 by David BergslandMay 7, 2012

Galatians 5:7–8 You were doing so well until someone talked you out of obeying the truth. This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you. We must always be careful who we listen to. Over the years my wife and I have spent countless hours correcting strange beliefs held by immature Christians. Note carefully, I do not see any hint here that Paul is calling these people heathens. What he is saying is that the result … Continue reading →

Legalism versus freedom: Ishmael or Isaac? Galatians 4:21-31

Skilled Workman Posted on March 26, 2012 by David BergslandMarch 26, 2012

Verse 4:21–31 Tell me now, you who have become so enamored with the law: Have you paid close attention to that law? Abraham, remember, had two sons: one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. The son of the slave woman was born by human scheming; the son of the free woman was born by God’s promise. This illustrates the very thing we are dealing with now. The two births represent two ways of … Continue reading →

Get a grip about Amazon! They’ll sell your books.

Skilled Workman Posted on March 20, 2012 by David BergslandMarch 20, 2012

Writer Folks – Time to “Man-up” about Amazon. You don’t matter that much. « Andy Holloman – Novel – “Shades of Gray”. Andy has nailed it here. Amazon is too large to personally deal with each one of us. We need to be thankful that they’ll let us in—at all. Lulu is just as bad for the same reasons. The point is: You do not have to use them!

Observing seasons: God-ordained… Galatians 4:10-11

Skilled Workman Posted on March 5, 2012 by David BergslandMarch 5, 2012

Today I want to talk about seasons. For years I have found joy in the liturgical year. The Advent to Ascension season about the Lord and the Pentecost season about walking in the Spirit always made internal sense to me. The yearly cycle of winter through spring to summer and back through fall is also deeply meaningful to me personally. When I was a heathen, the cycle of the Zodiac was comforting. But the question in all … Continue reading →

Learning to walk in freedom, part 9: Galatians 4:1-7

Skilled Workman Posted on February 20, 2012 by David BergslandFebruary 20, 2012

Chapter Four; Verse 4:1–7 Children who are under age are no better off than slaves, even though they are heirs of everything their parents own. They have to obey their guardians and teachers until the time their parents have set. That is how it was with us before Jesus came. We were like children—slaves to the basic spiritual principles of this world. But when the time was right, God sent his Son—born of a woman, under the Law, … Continue reading →

Getting set up to freely create your type

Skilled Workman Posted on February 15, 2012 by David BergslandFebruary 15, 2012

One of the more daunting aspects of book design for the inexperienced is page layout. Most people have Word experience and as I have said countless times already—Word cannot do professional page layout. In fact, it is worse than that because Word’s feeble attempts give you bad habits and poor expectations—which must be corrected. I’m assuming that you have your preferences set up; and that you have designed a good, efficient workspace that fits your style of … Continue reading →

Learning to walk in freedom, Part 8: Galations 3: 19b-29

Skilled Workman Posted on February 13, 2012 by David BergslandFebruary 13, 2012

This week we talk a bit about the bondage of the law and why God gave it to us. HINT: It was not to bring about a “good” or “perfect” society. It certainly was not to bring life or any of the fruit of the Spirit. ____________________________________ Galatians 3:19b–20 The law was given through angels who used Moses for a mediator to give the law to people. But a mediator is not needed when there is only … Continue reading →

Typography for ministry: The reality of picking fonts

Skilled Workman Posted on February 8, 2012 by David BergslandFebruary 8, 2012

The basic parts of type Again, we need some more basic language definitions. Without it, I can not help you in your ministry. You can see above how the point size of the type relates to the ascender, cap height, x-height, baseline, and descender. More importantly, you get a glimpse of things that are important in the world of typography. This illustration is from an introduction to typography in publishing found in Appendices A & B in … Continue reading →
