Why are publishing programs at schools shutting down?

Skilled Workman Posted on August 18, 2009 by David BergslandAugust 18, 2009

There are many reasons. I was talking with one of my friends on Facebook this morning. She wants to  get into teaching what she knows. She asked my opinion, and I went into my standard long lament about the state of graphic design and typography education in America. It’s bad, and  it has been bad for years. I first  learned this as an art director for one of the largest printing companies in town. One of our … Continue reading →

A new book release: Practical Font Design: FontLab 4.6

Skilled Workman Posted on August 17, 2009 by David BergslandAugust 17, 2009

A journey with an experienced font designer through the creation of a new OpenType font developed for release. This is also part of the training materials for the apprentices of the Hackberry Font Foundry. That’s the blurb on Lulu. This is the first limited release on my Practical Font Design book. It is limited because it’s done on FontLab 4.6 and FontLab 5 has been out for quite a while. As you know, Hackberry Fonts is a … Continue reading →

A reminder of how everything’s changed

Skilled Workman Posted on July 24, 2009 by David BergslandJuly 24, 2009

print, death of print, interactive advertising, print advertising, traditional advertising, interactive marketing, Forrester Research, Ad Age : By Bob Sacks : Publishing Executive. Yes, we all know this, but we need to constantly remind ourselves. Media, communication, & publishing have radically and irrevocably changed. Like it or not — it’s reality. This is a short but good article with some good stats. We need to get on our faces and ask the Lord what that means to … Continue reading →

Practical Font Design: Parts #1-3 Proof by David Bergsland (Book) in Arts & Photography

Skilled Workman Posted on July 6, 2009 by David BergslandJuly 6, 2009

Practical Font Design: Parts #1-3 Proof by David Bergsland (Book) in Arts & Photography. We just published a beta proof of the first three parts of the upcoming book called, “Practical Font Design”. It’s a guide to using FontLab to make fonts for yourself as a graphic designer who loves type. It will also be used as a sourcebook for apprentices of Hackberry Fonts. Their hope is that by providing the proof at the heavily discounted price … Continue reading →

Printing transparency: Eliminating the White Box Effect

Skilled Workman Posted on July 6, 2009 by David BergslandJuly 6, 2009

InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Eliminating the White Box Effect. This has been an ongoing problem ever since we started using InDesign: drop shadows that look fine on the screen but which develop a white box in back of them when output. As you can see it is an easy solution, use either overprinting or CMYK. Who’d’ve thunk it?

Scientific study on the effects of good font use

Skilled Workman Posted on February 11, 2009 by David BergslandFebruary 11, 2009

A Recipe for Motivation: Easy to Read, Easy to Do: Scientific American Of course, they used two horrible fonts. Their good font: Arial is really very poor. It is just good when compared to Brush. What if they had used Amitale, which is designed for readability or even that old standard Garamond or Caslon, or Bembo, or even Baskerville? Imagine what would have happened if they not only used readable fonts, but a layout designed for readability? … Continue reading →

Christian Publishing: Marketing from Hell

Skilled Workman Posted on January 8, 2009 by David BergslandFebruary 24, 2015

I got another one yesterday — rather, my wife did, an unsolicited DVD and coin. Now I know that I am not obligated to do anything other than toss this type of junk in the trash (which we will). BUT it represents what we see a lot of in Christian circles theses days. This was not some fly-by-night ministry of theft. I suspect it is “legitimate” (it came from one of the many tentacles of “Focus on the … Continue reading →

Are Christians cheap, irresponsible, or ignorant?

Skilled Workman Posted on December 11, 2008 by David BergslandDecember 11, 2008

[Loud grunts are heard as Chak laboriously climbs onto his favorite soapbox] It seems to me, as I look around, that Christian printing, publishing, and art is dominated by cheap junk and overly sophisticated, ridiculously expensive, slick marketing campaigns. There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground. In most cases, the situation is really bad: large church or small ministry. There are many factors in this: Budgets are tight or there is more money than sense: Tight budgets are sometimes true. But the reality is … Continue reading →

Greetings from Chak!

Skilled Workman Posted on November 24, 2008 by David BergslandNovember 24, 2008

You can see a little of my background in the profile. I have been an artist for well over 30 years now and a Spirit-led believer for nearly that long.  My goal with this blog is to provide a forum for artists to communicate about the things that mean the most to them as believers. As you do, I believe that my creativity comes from my likeness to the Father. It is one of His best attributes, … Continue reading →

This site uses the pseudonyms of Bergsland Design for design work; and Radiqx Press for publishing. Both of these have been used for some time beginning in the past millennium. The Skilled Workman was begun in 2011 dealing with spiritual teachings about our Messiah and the Holy Spirit he sent to us to help us. If you want to meet Jesus, click here.
