Why I switched back to Fontographer 5.1 — 3 Comments

  1. Hi Mr. Bergsland,

I am thinking of purchasing your book, Fontographer: Practical Font Design for Graphic Designers. I would buy it to give me a practical task to perform in learning how to make typefacts.

However, the program that I will have is TypeTool, not FontLab or Fontographer.

So my question is, could I follow along with your instructions using TypeTool?

    Thank you.

    Stanley

  2. Hi Mr. Bergsland,

I am thinking of purchasing your book, Fontographer: Practical Font Design for Graphic Designers. I would buy it to give me a few practical task to perform in learning how to construct fonts.

However, the program that I will have is TypeTool, not Fontographer or FontLab.

So, could I use your book and follow along using TypeTool?

    Thank you.

  3. I doubt you could follow along. I do not have TypeTool. In looking it over on the WEbsite, I appears that TypeTool uses a Fontographer toolbar, but it says it’s built on the FontLab engine. Actually, Fontographer is now built on the FontLab engine. You cannot edit Opentype fonts, but it appears you can work with them if you start with a font which is already working.

Other than that, I sorry, but I’m not much help in this instance. I imagine the concelts fromt he Fontographer book will work. It seems likely that the drawing portions would translate and the toolbar looks very similar to Fontographer.

If you are still concerned, I would write FontLab and ask. But it is likely they’ll give you an answer similar to mine.

On the other hand, there have to be reasons why TypeTool is only $99.

Whatcha thinkin'?
